Artist's Comments

Just a quick 'n dirty little digital image of one of my sci-fi fantasy characters, BLU-22, all the while getting a handle of my new tablet. Many thanks to kaykaykit's wonderful water background tutorial and brushes that helped add the finishing touches: [link]

I should throw fish at you for calling it quick and dirty you, you... but you'd like that, wouldn't ya? XD

Aaaagh, the soft colors and the yummy shadowing and the beautiful play of light on the cute little 'phin's back. At least, I assume it's a dolphin, or something very alike it. Maybe the nose is a little too short for a dolphin? ^^; Sorry, I lack your expertise.
The scars are very effectful too, shows that there has been more violent time than what this peaceful picture is showing.

Hey, don't look at me, I love a good slash fic >_>
(And I don't have a brother.)

Throw me a fish? Why, thank you, ma'am, can I have s'more? :D

... Though you toss that lutfisk stuff at me one more time, and I'll-- IIIII'll-- *shakes fist*

And you're quite right in your assumption; BLU is quite dolphin, indeed! Though no species you would ever find on earth, anyway (that's what makes sci-fi fantasy so fascinating-- omg alien dolfins is teh kewlest!!1!). In fact, her stumpy beak is the direct result of her hybrid breeding, leaving her with just a tiny nub of a rostrum, along with a slight hump on her back hidden under her harness.

Next up, I'm drawing out those Krimzon Guard sharks of yours, now that I have the power of Photoshop at my side! Be -afraid-, little author... Be _mildly_ afraid!

Neoecco! Wow! I'm so glad to see you sharing art again!

This piece, however "quick 'n dirty" you may consider it (psh!), really lifted my spirits, especially considering the other dolphin-related media I'd taken in earlier today. Check out [link] -- but be warned, this story of a bottlenose calf who lost her flukes to a crab trap line late last year may just break your heart. The good news is, she's being cared for, she's adapted wonderfully to her handicap (swimming side-to-side like a fish!), and the aquarium hopes to raise money for a fluke prosthetic... but the image of that little girl with her stubby tail still made me want to cry. "Clarity," on the other fin, cheered me up immensely, so thank you for that!

BLU-22 reminds me a little of Kekaimalu, Sea Life Park's resident bottlenose/pseudorca hybrid. Gorgeous! I hope to see more from you soon. :D
:iconneoecco:
She reminds you of the little wolphin? You know, I am more than delighted to read that, since that adorable little hybrid was the original inspiration for BLU's design! I'm quite flattered to see that I managed to get the look down quite well, especially with the darker coloration and very blunt rostrum!

And that _is_ quite the distressing story, poor sweetie-- I never would have thought another dolphin suffered a similar affliction as the one in the Japanese park. I recall seeing that story on the news, giving the performing dolphin a new prosthetic set of flukes that seems to work like a charm! Still, hope they can manage to get the poor sweetie those prosthetics so that she may be able to swim properly once more. I always wondered, however, how much the heat exchange difference it would make on the individual, since the flukes are such a large space for body heat to be transferred to their environment-- but given the other sites of heat exchange on the body, that probably wouldn't be all that grand an issue to the dolphin's well-being. Not being able to swim would be far more distressing, I believe.

Anyway, thank you for the lovely comment! I consider this piece "quick and dirty" because, surprisingly, it didn't take me a month or two to complete! I've got other things waiting in the wings, but this is the first digital piece to be fully completed before the others. Hopefully, some better stuff will be on the way soon!

Ick. Don't worry, I'll spare you the lutfisk. I'll eat it only because it makes granny happy, and that's it. Brrr. ;D

It's so cool that you can add all those details with your knowledge of the marine world :3 And make it look perfectly lifelike, even with alien mammals. I think that's really kewl.

Oooh Krimzon Sharks! I'm looking forwards to seeing that. And don't worry, I'll be afraid... I will. XD

Very cool. Have you ever read David Brin's Uplift books? They have gene-enhanced dolphins in them, among other things.

Does a bear Poo in the Woods?
Yes he does.

Why does the little symbol-cog thing at the bottom right corner remind me of something out of a video-game? It's like the thing you use to check how much health you have left in Jak!
Okay, as for the drawing itself, just how many times do I have to say, "I f*ckin' hate you..." for you to share some of your talent with me, eh? ;) Well... Okay, maybe I luv you even if your "quick & dirty" is the equivalent of my "24+ hours of slavin' away." :P Dork. ^_^
I love how you do those reflective lines on the dolphin, or... how do you call it? Y'know, the way the sun's hitting the water partly determining how the light hits the phishie. You're gonna have to show me how you do underwater backgrounds and such, and how you color your phish so I can get to work on my Under-the-sea farm, dude.

nice little scars and rake marks on this critter, most people forget that dolphins usually look a little beat up. You've even got little pockmarks on the rostrum, nice! Purple eyes...hmm, must not be a dolphin from our world!

Great use of the brushes and background technique, I've used 'em both before, but not with such nice results!

Oh my gosh! You got a tablet! Which means you're going to be 3 million times more awesome! This proves it! I love the little phins coloring and that scifi like thingie on his head!
